Re: Lathe leveling

Remember to take in to account the wear on the bottom of the saddle. On most lathes it will be 4 or 5 times more than is what is seen on the bed. The saddle is short compared to the bed and travels the bed, so.... And the left operator side will have the most wear. I will long remember when that dis...

Bill, I think you meant Cadmium , not Chromium.

Re: Petroleum Jelly (aka Vaseline) shelf life

I have a small jar of it that's been in the shop since the late '60s. It's darkened slightly but is still good. I don't think the highly refined grease will deteriorate much in a hundred years sealed in the jar.

Very handy stuff !

Re: Benchmaster milling machine.

I have a Benchmaster vertical. It's a small machine but nicely built. The major drawback, compared to larger machines, is that the quill is fixed. It doesn't move in a drill press fashion so drilling/spotting holds is done by raising the knee. The other unusual thing is that the knee screw extends t...

Re: Brand new old school south Bend 10” lathe!

That 10K is a brand new machine with most all the tooling. It has a hardened bed. It's built better than any lathe it's size on the market today. It's got a couple of life times of home shop use in it and then there is more than enough left to rebuild for another lifetime in someones shop. You won't...

Re: Phoson 0 brazing rod

Absolutely correct, Russ! Makes changes causing brittleness.

I used to do a lot of fabricating with Sil-Fos, gas and tig, and it can't be beat for how handy it is compared to actually welding copper, which takes loads more heat!

Re: What are these things?

Long ago I had some Somma tooling and a catalog. I remember those and, they are cut-off tools. They mounted on a shank like the pre-formed 60* threading tools that looked similar...

Make a shank and use a good stout bolt,,

Nice find!
