Re: Globe & Check Valves Now Available
Santa Fe steam locos had pipe coils under wood foot boards. A valve was used to control steam flow through the piping.

Re: 1.5/1.6 Scale Prime Washout Plugs
Hi Tim,
Just be sure of the dimensions you are looking for. The 2-1/4” plug screws into a 3” fitting. That’s what them screws into the boiler. Or jacket in our case. The 2-7/8” screws into a 3-1/2” fitting.
Mike Venezia with The Backstop sells some, but they are a little larger.

Re: Boiler insulation
Hi Greg,
Chuck Hackett did a pretty detailed study when he was rebuilding his FEF.
His web site has all the details, but in a nutshell a dead air space did as good a job of insulation as the product(s) he tried.
I’m sure the link to his website is around here somewhere.

Re: Propane firing
Scott may be who told me, but the tanks made to be used vertically are made differently than the horizontal tanks, and can freeze up at times if laid on their sides.
The interval piping is different between the two styles.

Re: Repairing the fratured spokes on the cast iron drive wheel
It can be done. I have a cast iron pot similar to a Dutch oven that’s been in my family for decades. It has a repair up one side from the bottom to nearly the top. From the looks I’d guess it was arc welded, certainly with the proper preheating and cool down as discussed here. It has been heated and...

Re: Wye Switch Frog Number
If you build the switch “from scratch”, I.e,. Custom design the frog and build the whole thing you can build a true curved wye, including the frog. Switches are straight through the frog and points because the frogs are made straight, so there has to be a length of straight through it and the points...

My question if you are using to seal gaps in steam supply lines to the cylinders inside the outside dry pipes to the smokebox…

Re: Sharing a little progress
I had fun learning to run my friend’s 2-8-0 on his flat oval. Of course nothing is ever truly flat. Got to reading about notching up the loco. Started practicing and figured out the flat oval wasn’t really dead flat at all. So much more fun setting the throttle and controlling the loco with the John...
