This is a glass ground vial. I will not assume it is very linear nor true in a rotational axis.

Your pump is at the bottom of your well. Extremely hard water may increase the frequency of kidney stones in people who are at risk of developing them for other reasons.

I see no reason why the rings wouldn't provide a smooth, concentric surface to indicate on.

Is there an unbent section of the shaft near the base that you could indicate on?

The alcohol from the gas pump is ethanol. Dry gas is methanol or isopropyl alcohol. All of those are hygroscopic and readily absorb water into the mix (though some people say ethanol more readily breaks down and releases that water?). Personally...
