Your pump is at the bottom of your well. Extremely hard water may increase the frequency of kidney stones in people who are at risk of developing them for other reasons.

I see no reason why the rings wouldn't provide a smooth, concentric surface to indicate on.

The alcohol from the gas pump is ethanol. Dry gas is methanol or isopropyl alcohol.
