Re: Extremely abrasive surface on new cast iron
I have had the benefit of hanging around iron foundries a bit, and also have had to deal with that junk in the castings. Mike nailed it; it's sand and iron mixed due to bad mould making. Incredibly difficult to deal with. The last time I had to deal with it was on a lathe bed casting, a very old one...

Re: er collets
Since the subject has come up, I'm wanting to sort out things ER and decide what to buy. Or more specifically, who to buy from. I've read some things that indicate that some products sold as "ER" aren't compatible with the 'standard' ER. Obviously I don't need any non-standard ER. I think ...

Re: Need A Little Help With Drill I.D.
To my knowledge PTD is still in business. I haven't checked. Sharpening those drills can't be done on your normal Drill Doctor type as you know. It takes a cutter grinder to get to the ends of the flutes behind the pilot. Any tool and cutter grinding shop, that does end mills, c'sinks, and the like ...

Re: Need A Little Help With Drill I.D.
Looking closely, there is no flute relief on the pilots and at least one has a diametric relief where the pilot joins the drill portion. The pilots are ground as cylinders with no relief. Most definitely pilot drills intended for enlarging an existing hole, or part of a hole anyway. Never intended f...

That was such a wonderful thing to do for your son. He will never, ever, forget that time. You are to be commended for
that.

Re: How does temperature affect metals being worked?
Glenn, The mic changes also. Which is why cal labs are maintained at STP and the things brought in are allowed to equillibrate before being examined. I have never checked to see what the change in a mic is in a cold or hot shop. My shop goes from 45*F to 80*F with the seasons. Since it's winter I mi...

Re: Surface plate coming tomorrow. How to get it on the sta
"Other" Pete again. It has been known to set the rock in till it just touches the stand then check under to see where it's touching or not. A couple of times I've had to grind off high points on the stand. Another trick is to use a soft wood block at each corner. Say soft pine or bass wood...

Re: Surface plate coming tomorrow. How to get it on the sta
Will the stand design allow straps around the slab while it is being set into place? Or is it the usual leg-up angle all round sort of 'socket'? For the usual, I've put 2x4s across the narrow direction, set the slab on those, taken the straps off the slab. Then rigged a couple of jacks from undernea...
