Re: Would You Buy Used Tanks?
That swastika thing is interesting-I was having a hard time getting my head around why an oxygen tank would be spoils of war...seems like Walthers & broomhandle Mausers were more like what a soldier would ship home...

Re: frozen fittings/shafts/bolts
The old trick for freeing up a track-bound crawler tractor is to run it up & down a shallow stream bed, with water deep enough to get into the pins & bushings. If you're lucky enough to have a nice creek running right where you need it... My D2 Cat had been sitting in the same spot for about...

Re: The Irony of Material Shopping
Worst thing that ever happened here was the local scrap/surplus/steel yard guy retiring & selling out to a big company-(Pacific Steel)...used to be able to hunt around the yard, they had bins w/ brass, Al, cutoffs ,drops, etc., at good prices...no more, you can't get past the office, & no re...

Re: How Big a Tank for Smith Little Torch?
I have one of the little backpack size torch sets on the service truck. 90% of the jobs I do use a torch for a minute or 2-cutting off a bearing race, heating a broken-off bolt, brazing a hydraulic line...the little bottles last on the average over a year. I have a larger set, medium size bottles in...

Re: The home shop machinist, health of the hobby
How did those bearings turn out, Ron? Are they operational? If so, any regrets with the final choice of alloy? They turned out great, fit beautiful, but not tested yet, the D2 being the side project & suffering from lack of time, due to other concerns, not the least of which was getting married...

Re: The home shop machinist, health of the hobby
I've been on this forum since 2003, (had to look at my profile to see, & I was surprised it's been that long...). My participation has dropped off a lot lately on this & other forums I hang out on, due to I guess it would be called forum burnout...just seems like the same ol' same ol', over ...

Re: Broken end mill, ruined part!!
RED FLAG TIME! End mills don't bend. Unless they are made in China, the mysterious land where mystery metal come from. They forgot to harden it, or They quenched after coming out of the oven long after the power failed I worked with Chinese vendors and is comical the creativity displayed in screwin...

Re: Male or Female End on Compressor Hose?
What's the best way to terminate an air compressor hose? Male fitting or female? When you go male, the air blasts out when you remove the tool, so you have to shut the tank valve. Sorry, but why is there even a question about this? :? It's like why isn't there 2 live prongs sticking out of a wall s...
