Re: machining should square

Re: How would you make these adjacent tapers on lathe

Re: Is Jet good quality

You have to understand what Practical Machinist is- mostly people in commercial machine shops that have zero interest in inexpensive hobby-class machines. Their rules are pretty specific on what can and can't be discussed. I'm basically a hobbyist but usually get along OK there because I stay away f...

Re: New-to-Me Logan 400

I hate 4-bangers and only use the QC. Get the wedge type and get a bunch of cheap holders from CDCO. Get a box of new dog point screws and replace the ones that come with the holders. Set 'em up for the tools you need and go to town.

Re: Great way to take up time...

That may be the worst result of getting a surface grinder. It makes you realize how badly you need a proper tool and cutter grinder to go with it.

Re: Great way to take up time...

Hey, wait until you start looking at small drill bits. I've seen some where the grind was backwards. Yes, the grinding and stoning should be perpendicular to the edge for the strongest edge. I also suggest people not use carbide paper and such to finish edges because they round the edge right where ...

Re: key type chuck with R8 mount

Never seen such a thing, but I've been using chucks with taper mounts for decades and have never had one spin. It's probably good to blue them up before assembly to be sure the taper is exact. I think it was just a bad assembly job.

I can't imagine tightening anything to the mill table so tightly as to threaten even the worst threaded rod.

Re: HEIGHT Gauge question

With a magnifier (my eyes are shot) it's easy to read a good Starrett or other vernier height gauge to half a thou.
