Re: Why not steel?
That was fast! When I've asked around, the answer that I've gotten was: Rust! (you dummy) the dummy part was implied only. I was not satisfied with that answer but became a little timid about asking any more. Obviously, there are a lot of practitioners out there having success with steel. That's wha...

Re: Why not steel?
Rust? With all those steel boilers out there? What about the prototypes? All the steel parts on my engine are so greasy that rust rarely appears. The only place I see rust is on steel that is near the fire where it dries out and the baked-on oil flakes off.

Why not steel?
Why does no one mention the use of steel for steam cylinders etc? I've seen a lot of "built up" cylinders in brass and bronze, but not steel. Steel is nice to work with, can be easily welded, silver soldered, broached, drilled and pipe of all diameters and thicknesses are available. Sized ...

I've heard that Bob Haverstock has a kit for sale but have not been able to find it on the web. Anybody know how to get it?

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?
Lodsb, would this be crest to crest? It looks like a square thread so I'm not sure where the crests are. the caliper is reading something like .280.

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?
Thanks John but I'm not sure which gear setting I would use. I'm still a little confused as to the lead and pitch. Please see the photo. this is the rubber casting I made. The calipers are set on 1/2". Have any idea?

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?
Thanks John. I'm still not sure what gear setting I would need as I'm still a little confused as to the lead and pitch. Have a look at the photo. This is the rubber ca RE worm 005.jpg sting I took from the female bushing. The calipers are set on 1/2" and it is a three start thread. Any guess or...

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?
Thanks Glenn, it took me a while but I did get that. I'm going to have to make the part. All the UK suppliers I contacted don't have it. I just found out though that Harley, Suzuki and Yamaha used a similiar clutch worm. I might be able to adapt something.

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?
Harold, thanks for your help with this topic. I checked a lot of other sites and everything that you said was confirmed. When I set my gears for 5 TPI and started the spindle, the pressure on the gears snapped the studs out of place, disengaging them. I just tightened them down but could see that ev...

Re: Cutting English threads on a southbend 9" lathe?
I have not given up yet. I'm planning to lock my leadscrew and spindle with a timing belt and possibly use a rotary spindle in my toolpost and cut the thing or get a stepper drive for my milling table feed, set it to the propper feed rate, chuck the piece in my cnc rotary indexer which will index th...
