Re: horsemeat
In europe horse meat is not uncommon. I ordered it in a restraunt in Switzerland wanting to try it. It was in a sauce so it was not easy to get a taste of the meat but it was quite good. If one didn't know better the dish I had could have been beef.

Re: Measuring tools
DC said "I didn't think the Starrett 6" caliper even had a depth rod. Many I have seen were a bare open rack." One of my first major screw ups while starting machining was to leave the dial calipers on the table of the mill and get crap in the rack and ruin the calipers. So take heed ...

Re: Request for manual on Logan shaper
JP I look at the cost of publications in this way. If I screw up just one part or process that the manual could have prevented then I am probably way ahead on the cost of the manual. Your going to pay for an education someway. You can by books, you can spend a lot of time figuring it out yourself an...

Re: Facing oversized piece
When I was faced with a similar project I drilled and tapped the back side of the work peice and bolted it to my faceplate. Worked for me. I do believe that Carbide on an underpowered lathe is not the best way to go, use HSS.

Re: Help with a milling arbor stuck in the spindle?
As Bruce says. Had the same problem on a Sheldon with a B&S 9 arbor stuck in it. Discovered that an arbor spacer of I believe 1.25" id would just fit over the arbor and land nicely in the spindle. Put the smaller arbor spacers back on the arbor to space out to the nut, put the nut on and ga...

Re: Simple machinist job?
Yes this is off of a metal lathe. The top speed of it will depend on what you drive it with. On the origional lathe this came off of would have had a top speed in the 1800-2000 rpm range but I believe that you could turn it up to 2500 without harm. The gears are "back gears" used for very ...

Re: Simple machinist job?
Take a look at the e-bay item 3864926843. This is a complete headstock from an atlas lathe. You get the spindle, bearings, drive pulley, and the casting to hold it all. I would think that this could be affixed to the bed rails of your wooden lathe and solve all, at least a lot, of your problems. Agr...

Re: Simple machinist job?
This looks to a part of a print out of a magazine. Can you post a bit more of the drawings so we can get an idea of what the big picture is. expecially what the bearings are in the headstock. We would then be able make some suggestions on what you need to use for materials, some alternatives to what...

"I cut down on my rvc noise by using three thicknesses of carpet under it,and using capacitors to balance the voltage. othrer than starting of the rvc or other machines the noise is like any other motor. Just an idea I may have lucked out." I don't think it was luck. I mounted my RPC motor...

Re: Setting up a DRO
Are you perchance setting up a DRO without a resetable zero? If that is so then I would suggest that you put zero where the dials on the handwheels go positive with the DRO going positive. Otherwise it should not matter, Zero is where you set it for the job at hand.

Re: Here is my beef on this matter ( a bit of a rant)
Manuals are very expensive to produce. Where I work we ordered a custom machine that was above 10 million dollars. Part of the contract was a complete drawing package. We received the machine without the finished drawing package, but promises it was coming. We ordered a second machine a year later a...
