Re: Band saw mod
And Delta used a gear box to shift between high and low. As I recall, a belt reduction can be done with two shafts works very well but takes up more space. I've seen pics of saws with the complete belt reduction under the saw, neatly done. I cut alum all the time on mine. If I know I'm going to cut ...

Re: Why would industry use undersized taps?
Threads can have various fit tolerances for different applications. These will require different taps and dies.
The most common 'different' taps are oversize for use where plating is involved.

Re: Buying a 4 jaw chuck
Having done a bunch of barrels in the last 30 years, and being associated with some really good 'smiths, I can say with certainty that a 4 jaw independent chuck is the only way to go. I use a 4 jaw more than a 3 jaw for most everything. The 3 jaw is used when I'm doing parts where the concentricity ...

Re: Boilers and anodes
What he said! One of the best examples I can think of concerning aluminum/stainless steel things in salt and fresh water is the older Volvo-Penta outdrives. We've got tons of them around here and a lot of them are still giving great service. Like most marine drives, the housings are alloy castings (...

Re: Old lincoln buzzbox quit
I had one of those for about 30 years also. A friend now has had it for 10 years. Still going strong! They are really simple and what you've done should have found the problem. However, I think that fan is 120 VAC and if so it takes it's power from only one leg of the 220 to the neutral. If you've l...

Re: Floating reamer holders
John is correct about those old ones if you can find one. The Hemmingway unit seems to be correctly designed, and I may purchase their plans as I find I'm needing one again and the design is a bit simpler than the one I did over 30 years ago!
Thank you, RSG, for pointing out Hemmingway's!

Re: Floating reamer holders
I'll pitch in late. Floating holders seem to have two designs: those that allow the reamer axis to float while remaining perfectly parallel to the headstock axis and those that don't. Avoid the latter as they only allow angular motion. The good ones float axially and angularlly. This axial is achiev...

Re: 3 jaw chuck
If the chuck scroll is worn, each different size piece chucked will come to a different center. If the jaw gripping surfaces are worn, changing the size of the part will not change which jaw shows high/low. Most new 3 jaw chucks aren't going to get better than about .003" TIR overall anyway unl...
