This is a picture of the gooseneck tool holder that popped into mind. It lets the cutter deflect under heavy load.

Re: Machine Tools Should be Floppy

, but the very idea that a machine tool is intentionally made "floppy" is absurd, as is the notion that an extremely rigid machine is subject to breakage. H While I totally agree with your post the image that popped into my mind is the gooseneck tool holder. Just something invented to get...

Re: bridgeport handwheel clutch collar - ball stuck

The ring I'm trying to remove is Quill Housing Item# 113. Comp# 8007118 Part# J-118 "Hand wheel clutch" The problematic ball is Item# 173 shown on my diagram just above the clutch ring. I don't think it's peened in, just saying it acts like it. It seems to move freely enough in its hole, ...

Re: Five Minutes to Warm up a Tractor???

You can get a bit of an indication from the color of the exhaust and the 'smoothness' of the idle. Cold thick fuel does not atomize well so a bit of a warm up is advised. If you have been running the tractor then a warm up is not necessary.

Re: The Clausing Arrives or 10lb in 1lb bag

Going to take some getting use to having a cross slide that the calibration is for diameter rather than radius. Bet that difference gets me into trouble on the other lathes !! Really like having the clutch and brake ! :D I have two lathes in my shop, one of each dia & rad. I ended up put...

Re: Trailer Hitch Weight Ratings

I'm about to move to northern Florida. I am considering getting a small trailer for my truck, to move certain things. Problem: I don't know anything about trailer hitches. I thought about renting a trailer. U-Haul's site wants the weight rating of my hitch. Is that a characteristic of the bar itsel...

Re: DRO for milling machine or lathe

I chose to do the mill first. To me it has a lot more chance to error with because of backlash or miscounting and working over larger areas. It's also handy to have all the functions of tool offset, origins, bolt holes and other functions I've not used. I find it easy to put a dial indicator on the ...

Re: Situating Fixed Tools in New Shop

With garage doors at each end, blowing dust and crap out of the building should be pretty easy. I learned a long time ago that stuff blown out the door will soon come right back in. Learn to vacuum and life will be better. Right now I'm trying to figure out what to do about drywall and insulation. ...

Re: Situating Fixed Tools in New Shop

As far as being far from civilization, you make that sound bad... Life in the country is a lifestyle, not suited for all. Second, my dad will be with me. He's 85, and he has vascular dementia. If we're not too far from shops and diners and so on, he may be able to retain a little independence a whi...
