I inherited a partially completed Stuart twin compound. Haven't even started on it yet. Have too much to learn before I take a chance on messing up what good work is already done on it.

I've had the whole week off and haven't had a chance to turn the lathe on all week.

Welcome!

Could the top spring leaf serve as both the bracket and the spring leaf? The shape would be an H. It they were cut out and heat treated you wouldn't lose the height for the bracket, but would still have the function. I'm no expert on trucks, but that top leaf probably doesn't do much bending. Inste...

As many of my tools have been bought from the collections of retired toolmakers (in which case I get the pleasure of talking to the former owners), or from their estates, many have names engraved on them. When I use them, I try to remember the work that those tools used to do in more capable hands t...

I have a set of 7 (one missing). One is machined, the rest are rough castings.

The bore is about 0.4". The sides are 0.650 apart where the bolts would be and 0.910 tall.

Have no idea what scale they are, but would be willing to sell if they are 1-1/2", as I would have no use for them.

You can do it. I parted 3-1/2" mild steel into wheel blanks with my atlas. Here's repeating and adding to what has been said: Sharp parting tool with some rake, and be damn sure you are on center. I push the tool against the work with a 6" ruler between them, and it the ruler ends up verti...

I saw that too. It's up to $400 with one day left to go. I thought that miht be a good alternative to a Bridgeport head to mount on the overarm of a smaller horizontal milling machine, like the Pratt & Whitney. Of course, the Brainard can handle a Bridgeport, so I don't need to worry about that....

I'd recommend http://www.maritool.com/Tool-Holders-BT-30-Drill-Chucks/c23_33_34/index.html for a drill chuck/mandrel. They are exceptionally nice, carburized .060", 100% ground, and very accurate. $110.00 and your in business. Made in Illinois, NOT CHINESE!! Glenn Might want to get one of thei...

Hey, it's not a bad paint job. Certainly not an e-bay special.

Looks like he took the time to take things apart and mask where appropriate.

Still, as Harold said - paint adds nothing to performance. Need to check it out.

Wow - just looked and it's up to $1,500 with 7 days to go!

Personally, I'm a bit older at 40-something, rapidly approaching 50-something, although my spindles include 4PN, 3MT and 9 B&S.

However, YOUR spindle is definitely a 30.

The following shows dimensions, and the opening for 30 is 1.25"

Re: collets

my only caution regarding purchasing that machine is that IF you are interested in doing collets, be aware that they run 3AT (if it is a 9" SBL). They are therefore limited to 1/2" diameter (maybe 9/16) and very hard (read EXPENSIVE) to find. SB 9" uses 3c (Atlas uses 3AT). 3C is sli...
