Re: Buying End Mills
once you have a good piece of steel shaped like an end mill, you then forge a relationship with a good sharpening service... A good sharpening service is hard to find. Often, they grind it wrong, which has been my experience. I buy new ones. A good quality import is what I use, unless I find a good...

Re: I may have found my problem...
I had been using 100 fpm for mild steel. When using this number and carbide inserts on the lathe, everything works well. When using this number with HSS tools on the mill, not so much. In general, I think I should be using speeds closer to 60-75 fpm with HSS on the mill. (It also doesn't help that ...

Re: Adjustable chucks
I prefer chucks with 4 adjusting screws, because you can dial them in closer than with 3 screws. The adjust true chucks that I have used with 3 screws will only let you dial in to .0005" and no closer.

Re: Name That Tool (V2)
The top one is a ball adapter and usually has a .200 " ball. So you subtract .2" from your measurement. This one looks like it may be a Mitutoyo ball adapter.
The next picture makes me think it an extension for a boring head.

Re: Assorted car stuff
My sister and er husband came over with a Ford Fairmont to sell back to me. It was her first car and she had just bought a van because her family grew out of the Fairmont. I bought it back and was going to service it as a spare car to have around. I opened the hood and fuel was spraying out of the m...

Re: Unbalanced 4 Jaw Set Up
Looks like you did just fine with what you had to work with. My lathe is 16" swing which has a larger 4 jaw chuck. It has T slots between the jaws that allow for balance weights to be bolted directly onto the chuck. I don't know if the smaller chucks that would fit your lathe are made with T sl...

Re: Help holding thin material for fly cutting
All-- Thanks for all the help! I went with Plan X. Last night I logged into McMaster-Carr and looked at sticky tape. To be brief, the list wasn't brief. Most of it was foam-backed. I was thinking that was not what I wanted. I am sure some selections were what I wanted, but none of the descriptions ...

Re: Proper procedure for NPT tapping & threading?
In soft material I like to use and interrupted pipe tap. It reduces the cutting force and less likely to strip out the threads. https://www.mscdirect.com/browse/tn?navid=2106060&searchterm=pipe+tap In the smaller sizes of NPT taps I like the spiral flute taps. The chips will curl out and give be...
