Re: Is buying a part finished project worthwhile?
There are so many variables in this question I think a suitable answer might be difficult to find. Factors will be the experience of the who or (who's) that were working on a project previously and also the subject. If a project is going to need alot of redo and new parts are readily available, is w...

Re: Requesting assistance for board issues
the best way I have found for a good general computer cleaning is to download ccleaner. I have apps on this computer trying to block as much of the adds as well as blocking most cookies from sites and there is still a bunch of junk that collects in just a week or two so its good to run ccleaner regu...

Re: Swanton Pacific Railroad support pulled by CalPoly
Shame it was not written into the 1993 donation of the land and railroad that if the railroad goes, so does the land back to the family or gets sold off and can no longer be used or of any benefit to the college.

Re: Brass, Bronze Piston valve clearance
Given the expansion of brass and bronze at the temperature of steam at 125 psi your valve at .940 " will expand roughly .0034 ". That said there are alot of variables but if you retain the current valve I would certainly give it .0035 or .004 cold clearance. just for reference here are som...

Re: Air compressor oil
Back in the late 50's or early 60's my father got a refrigeration compressor unit like that and had to fix the crankshaft bearings in the compressor and we used it for many years. The tank was underneath the compressor skid and quite small so we used a couple portable air tanks as extra capacity. If...

Re: New PRR T1 Being Built
In reality a fully operational T1 is no heavier per axle than a modern 6 axle locomotive. The issue would be that you have 470 or so tons of locomotive in a 122ft length vs 215 tons of modern diesel in an 80 ft or so length. Bridge loading would likely be the biggest problem. In working order a T1 i...

Re: Looking for Little Engines 1 1/2 pacific front coupler pocket
The person looking for the coupler pocket has tried for a couple months to call Little Engines and has gotten ahold of nobody. He sent at least one letter thru snail mail and nothing. I guess for the present we consider Little Engines as defunct or out of business. The pilot got fabricated over the ...

Re: Over annealing copper fire tubes?
Rollers need lubricated. Not sure what its made out of, maybe Marty can elaborate on that and if there is a suitable substitute. To me it looks like some type of lard mix and does seem to go bad after sitting many years. Also it sounds like you are over rolling. If all is right it doesn't take much ...

Re: Index model 55 mill
First thing I would do is get that spindle reground to R8.. from what I have read looking into getting one reground is Jackson machine doesn't put the index pin in so if you do something whacky you could possibly spin tooling in the quill. That isn't saying for more $$ they might go the extra effort...

Re: LED shop lights?
A bit late to the thread and I don't want to read all thru it but.. Our local utility has a rebate program going on for swapping out to LED's so check out your utilities offerings. You likely won't get the rebate at a box store as it takes some paperwork by the vendor to ensure things are kept on th...
