Re: How Do You Calculate Connecting Rod Length?

Rod Length A longer rod is better, right? maybe not. Many mikados / consolidations have the main rod connection on the third driving axle. This far back, should reduce the angle of the main rod from the cylinder centerline, thus increasing the verticle the force applied to the crosshead guides. Reme...

For those interested in Fox Trucks, here's a pic of a set at the Rockton Ricon Near Columbia South Carolina. Same place as Hampton and Branchville #44.

There's also some drawings of SP style fox trucks CSRRM.

Re: 1 1/2" Scale 2-8-2 Mikado Great Northern on air

Bob,
Can you offer some insight as to what parts are aluminum and what parts are not. Appears the rods are, but not sure from photos.
Will the tender be posted?

Making Flanges Guys, Tenn Valley RR Museum has a flanging machine in their shop I think. They got it several years ago. I never saw it run. It might be worth while to hit up the backshop gang and see if they have some advice on how the machine works and how you can apply it to our smaller problems. JP

Re: Link and Pin couplers

Dan, I did not see Dave's address so I'll just let you pass it along. I am good for 8 drafts. Just the rough castings, nothing machined at all. I'll post some more pics when I get down to the shop with a camera on what I have already built. The 5/0 was the result of a link not to wide for a milled s...

Large Boiler Flue Size Fellow Live Steamers, Who out there has attempted large flues in model boilers and what was the result? A few years ago I had a very interesting discussion with a guy named Metzger, who said he had an Atlantic that had only a few 2" flues. Claimed it could pull all day on...

Coil Springs for suspension substitute. Sure, one method you can try is the coil spring between the journal box and the frame. For all intents and purposes this method has justification based on some prototypes. For example. Many European engines DO NOT have equalized suspention on their locomotives...

John S,
You mentioned that your father had aspirations for a pacific in mind. Any particular prototype? Another RI engine maybe?
In 1987 he began working on an Allen mogul and had grander plans of building a pacific after the mogul was finished.
