Re: Project: N&W class J on 5"gauge

Hey Chris, Now come on and let us start with the two pairs of Commonwealth boogies to put them on wheels! My plans are to construct a mixed laser parts / casted solution. This will combine both stability which is needed for sitting on the tender and the admired GSC-look. With my A I'm just milling p...

Re: Nathan lubricators scale 1 " for my A

Hello Rick,
You got it! But look, I took care (by means of a washer outside) the inlet bore is placed at the lowest position.
Maybe a ring made of PTFE or silikon could do?
Thanks for your comment!

Nathan lubricators scale 1 " for my A

Hello steamers, Just recently I managed building 4 nathan 7 scale lubricators for my A project. Might be of interest due to their functionality despite theit scale size? Castings used were of a series of 1 " scale locomotive project. It was intended to have two independence outlets including ch...

Re: Coal firing with a superheated loco

Hello Redneck, You're right in regard of using gas or fuel instead of coal. Direct radiation will be reduced by means of an arch brick, too. But think of the high radiation of a long (yellow) flame which will reach the firebox tube sheet - somtimes right into the flues! Look, the main thermal resist...

Re: Coal firing with a superheated loco

Hello, just my 2 cents ... Working a superheated steam locomotive of 5" gauge (1 in 10) for some 30 years now, I recommend the following: Free gas area of the flues containing the superheater should be more than twice that of the tubes. This is due to the relation of their combined heating surf...

Re: Designing and running compound steam

What makes you think that a compound should not enjoy the lower blast pressure that a multiple blast cap can give as it uses the chimney far better?? Half an inch orifice with a chimney 5 times larger is a poor ratio anyway, it should represent the steam/ejected mass (combustion gas plus steam) rat...

Re: Designing and running compound steam

Hallo cbrew, Some compond engines of different sizes were built here with some success. Thinking of my friends "steamchris" Y6b (5 " gauge) or another somewhat bigger 0-4-4-0 narrow gauge (7 1/4 " gauge) loco these got cylinder ratios of 1 versus 1.8 to 2 (volumes HP versus LP). ...

Re: A with Timken running gear

Hello my friends, Time to report some progress achived during the last months. The tender body has been almost finished now. This fine job was fullfiled by my compagnions steamchris and his father. The tender is quite similar to that of their class Y6b. Next step will be construction of two pairs of...

Re: Sanding the Flues

Hello Fender, Believe me, I tried that several times on my DB class 44 3-cylinder just for fun - it works fine! Drive at medium speed, then don't be anxious working full out and open the fire door to let the exessive draft suck a shovel of fine sand into the firebox - done. But you'd better have a s...

Re: Help Identify a steam water pump

Rich,
Just one hint: Diameter of the water cylinder must not be greater than 2 / 3 of that of the steam cylinder to avoid sticking.
By the way your cylinder head seems to house a standard (Knorr-) valve gear, which mostly will work reliable.
Good luck!
