Re: Driving axle box lateral

Dale, I built the Railroad Warehouse version. Here is how I accomplished this task. P2141069.JPG Just make sure to take light cuts an only in the 'conventional' direction. Karl www.karlkobel.com for other details on the major portion of the build (I stopped updating it after a while - preferring to ...

Re: Help With Cab Roof

Dan, I thought I had some pictures, but a search didn't come up with them. My cab roof is similar (called Gambrel). I modeled the whole cab in CAD which allowed me to check the fit and then produce a flat drawing. For the shapes, I underlayed the line drawings of the locomotive I was modeling. I rol...

Re: Ready for the USS Monitor's Steam Engine ? Part 2

Thanks Rich,

I have seen this truly amazing model twice and am in awe of the craftsmanship.

A big thank you for your contribution as well.
A big piece of why I built a live steam model, and what our group is all about, is preserving history.

Re: Who makes 1 1/2" scale Builders and number plates?

I too got two usable builders plates.
I will write something up in a bit.

I was thinking of using small drive screws.

Re: Could I get some lessons about shopping for a locomotive build?

I agree with Greg, get the longest in the size and cut them as needed. I made a small block with multiple threaded holes. Thread the screw in to the length you want and use it to guide the saw and use it before you remove it to sand it flat. Then all you have to do is make sure it doesn't fling acro...

Re: Smokebox Length Ratio

It has a lot to do with smokebox throttle vs steam dome throttle.

I disagree, If the tubes are rolled in - try re-rolling them while the boiler is still on the loco.

Re: Who makes 1 1/2" scale Builders and number plates?

John, Not my original work - I found a lot of info on the internet. Search for Electrolysis. -I started with an 0.060 brass sheet. -I bought some toner transfer paper (used a lot in home brew PC boards). -I have a laminator and used it to transfer the toner to the brass. I have seen instructions of ...

Re: Who makes 1 1/2" scale Builders and number plates?

I didn't want to reply until my experiment was complete. Here is my builders plate just out of the tank and steel wool'd a bit. IMG_20201231_113332.jpg I will clean it up a bit more and decide how/if I want paint it. The process is similar to Cris Ruby's; toner transfer and etch. However, I didn't e...

Re: Who makes 1 1/2" scale Builders and number plates?

There was an article in a recent Live Steam & Outdoor Railroading from Chris Ruby about etching one yourself. I have made my first attempt, but I used a H2O2 - Vinegar concoction. While it did etch (maybe 0.020" deep), the acid wasn't strong enough. It took 4 batches of about 8 hours each. ...
