Re: Blued Steel for Jackets - Fred/Jesse

Fred & Jesse, It is an Allen 10 wheeler I ma building and therfore it is of the 8in variety. 8 5/8" is full OD, but we can cheat a little on the bottom I suppose. I live new a few small towns and will look closer. In fact my neighbor works at one of them - I'll have to ask her. Thanks, Peter

Re: Blued Steel for Jackets (? for Tim)

Lee Wheelihan's 10 Wheeler (ILS if I remember correctly) was in L.S. a few issues ago and I had a beautiful blue (steel I think) and green paint job. A little more than I want in terms of the second color, but beautiful none the less! Even wrapped the cylinders with it.

Re: Blued Steel for Jackets

Fred, I wouldn't take your comments personally anyway, as I have browsed and posted here enough to know your jist!! I have tried a few of such "stores", but to no avail as of yet. As for Jack's paint, it looks great. I was thinking that the blued steel might be easier to clean as you could...

Blued Steel for Jackets

I would like to make the boiler jacket for my Allen 10 wheeler boiler from blued steel (stove pipe?). Where can one procure such an item? How hard is it to keep clean and how? I plan to fire with coal, so it will get dirty. Jack - I noticed it on your beautiful American on your website. I am located...

Re: MORE than ot.....

Them there comments are a hunner percent true I am afeared!! Sure you ain't from 'round here boy? But seriously, they really are true!! We live 60 miles north of Atlanta off the I-85 side and all that crazyness is creeping this way at an alarming rate! I drive 37 miles to work just so I can live in ...

Re: Pilots - second shot w/paint

Thanks Jesse! His teeth have almost grown in for Christmas, but in 1 month he lost 4 teeth. I told him that unless he wanted to eat only applesauce or anything he could suck through a straw, that he should hold off on losing any more for a while!!!!! Only time will tell about the spring meet. My old...

Re: Pilots

I just used 1/8" Al. for the sides and 1/2" Al. angle for the armrests and corner braces. A couple guys there at Mid south have used Steel and Al. both with satisfactory results. The only comments I got were to make sure you brace the corners well and attach it all pretty good to the boile...

Re: Pilots

Brian, I am planning only minor changes to suit my taste and following Gene's plans pretty close. I made my own headlight (similar to a pyle w/angled numberboards), and I didn't buy his smokebox or cab castings although building them pretty close to the prints. I liked the engine because it is still...

Re: Pilots - second shot w/paint

Thanks Gentlemen. It is an Allen 10 Wheeler. Slow progress, but I did get what is done to Mid-South in the fall. There are a couple of pics on their 2004 fall meet page Mid-South Live Steam 2004 Fall Meet Index of the chassis and here is one of the completed tender frame/trucks and plywood tender ta...

Re: Pilots

Nice stuff if you can bolt it all together and make something that will be stationary, but still not great for mobile stuff. Just a little too much flex in it (AL) and the angle brackets and other attachments don't ever seem to be close enough or tight enough for me. When I took those shots, that st...
