Re: Gloves and drill presses

When I started in maintenance at the foundry, an "Old Timer" took me aside and proceeded to inform me of the safety instructions for running drill presses, milling machines and lathes. Never ever any gloves, never ever leave the chuck key in the chuck for even a second unless loosening and...

Great Video!

My wife and I are planning on being at the next Triennial, with 7.5" equipment no less.

Re: Magnetic Starter on 1 HP Motor?

Why not a simple on/off switch? Steve, A ON/OFF switch would be a maintained device and wouldn't allow for overload protection which would drop the motor off line which a mag will allow The mag also allows multiple start/stop stations to be used from various locations to start or stop the motor. Ma...

Re: washing welding gloves?

This is also the reason that I DO NOT wear my wedding ring at work. Gold is a better conductor of electricity and heat than copper. My recommendation is DO NOT WEAR ANY JEWELRY that is NOT plastic. I wear only the cheapo plastic watch/watch band. If it gets caught on anything, it will break before ...

Re: Tribute to Kozo Hiraoka

I built the first Shay and had that running in 1985. I thought that I could silver solder until I read Kozo's book. After that I would pick up all of the silver solder pieces that the other guys in maintenance would throw out and save them. That book on the shay helped a lot in machining parts as we...

Re: mill motor vibration

Three phase motors won't always reverse either. If they are running CW and you reverse it, it may keep going CW anyway. We had this problem with roof fans and combustion air blowers all of the time (negative air pressure) where I use to work.

Re: Two shops or one?

Heat and cool one shop. In the long run it is cheaper just to leave the heat or ac on, than it is to turn it off when your done. This way, you are more likely to use the shop more because it is ready to go, no freezing, no hot humid. Just comfortable. Plus the tools and machinery don't rust. And yes...

I have no idea.

Believe me, I keep bringing it up. If he would use it, I could help him more.

Give him a call between 6 and 9pm weekdays or on weekends. His phone number is
listed on his website. And no, he doesn't watch his email. :(

Hey! Get in Line! :D

Seriously, I will tell him. I know he had an order in to the foundry for lightweight wheels, cause I need 4.

Re: Railroad Supply will be at NEOLS on Sept 7

No he doesn't! :? Even I have to call or drop in on him to get in contact.
Mike is a machinist/tool maker, not a computer user.

The best time to get a hold of him, is between 6-9pm EST and of course weekends.
