Re: Jet 1236P

I solve the chuck install problem. It seems the chuck goes on in so precise a position, it has to be mounted DEAD center of the plate, and then once its pulled tight, it goes on and off with no problem. The more I learn about this lathe, the more things make sense. Its like this lathe has none of th...

Re: Craigslist find of the month

just found this. seems a little high in price, but might still be worth investigating. He'll take 950 for the set. Jensen #334B500 mill, xyz travel 8.65" x 3" x 6.5" made by Sherline, same as Sherline 5000. ($600 just mill and tooling) Jensen #334B400 lathe, 3.5"x8" made by ...

Re: Jet 1236P

My HF 5980 3n1 had a set screw in the cluck plate collar that you could just tighten the crap out of and held the chuck to the spindle when in reverse. Ive got a set of metric taps, so I guess I could drill and tap this one too. How big a set screw would you think I should use? Couple of 8mm should ...

Re: Craigslist find of the month

That sharper may be worth a pretty penny, but I think I got the buy of the month. 1977 Jet 1236ps from a woodworking shop. Still had the plastic labels over the metal plates. Nobody wanted it because it was covered in sawdust and the original shipping grease. Man posted it for 750, I traded a 450 ri...

Re: Jet 1236P

It seems its easier to thread the plate on first, and then bolt the chuck to it. Once I did that, it went on and off with ease. Guess I just had to play with it for a while. Ive about decided the designers of this lathe did everything they could to confuses new users. One full turn of the saddle han...

Re: Jet 1236P

Well, I found something bewildering. The chuck wont screw on. Ive completely disassembled the chuck, cleaned, re-oiled it, and it just wont screw back on. The still rusted face plate and drive plate screwed on, and cleaned right up. But the one piece I expected to have the least problems with , just...

Re: Jet 1236P

Man Have I had a day. I no longer consider myself a new machinist. I now know my lathe INSIDE and out. I tore the saddle down and reassembled it three times before I got it right. You were right about those brass gears. But the third time, I just went all out. Tore it back down, soda blasted the iro...

Re: Jet 1236P

I still consider myself a new machinist, even though this is my second lathe. I never thought, a professional, even a pro woodworker would ever allow a piece of equipment to get this bad. There is saw dust in every nook and cranny I've found. So far, Ive completely disassembled the tail-stock, cross...

Re: .22LR Suppressor build

I'm getting ready to build a can for my 6.5 Grendel, and 6mm Creedmore. Thought I'd post it here and get you guys opinion. Its my first form 1 build, and I really don't want to screw it up. Both barrels are 26 inches, so it will never see muzzle pressure over 4800psi. What you think? https://goo.gl/p...

Re: Jet 1236P

Ive been fairly impressed with this one. My indicator isn't good enough to measure any run out on this Vanco chuck, So I guess Ive got a keeper. One problem is the lack of usage. This thing is 39 years old, and I don't think its ever been cleaned. The head-stock was completely dry, and The original ...

Re: Hello all, and Jet 1236PS 1236-PS

charlie, your lathe looks a great deal like mine. This one came with no tooling except a 3-jaw chuck and steady rest. If your orphaned chuck happens to be a 4-jaw, I'd be interested in buying it from you. Sorry Rex but it is a 3-jaw. I didn't have a 4-jaw for it. This is the 3-Jaw I still have. htt...

Re: Jet 1236P

I just bought the same lathe, a 1977 Jet 1236ps from a wood working shop about 2 hours from home. It was covered so bad with sawdust and muck, the pictures didn't even look like a lathe. But when I cleaned it off, It still had the shipping grease on it. The plastic that covered the metal labels was ...
