Re: 12" working railroad
Hmmph! Take it slow and easy. It is real easy to chomp at the bit and make things worse than you started. A day or two of full healing will last the rest of your days. A good time for planning and daydreaming instead of risk. Go slow, there will be a better time.

Re: Small Diesel engines for motive power
As an aside, you can use those copper based chore-boy pads as packing for mufflers too. They do not blow apart or corrode much and strain the gases for slowing the wave pulses nicely.

Re: Power for a hoist
I am dealing with some other issues today but rest assured I will continue The little hoist was used as an aid in moving heavy 100-200 lb weldements to a positioning table for assembly. It is told to me that the hoist was grossly overloaded at times for various parts and failed. It came to me by way...

Re: Power for a hoist
OK If I ring the leads on the disconnected motor, what should I be seeing for values?? This thing has a control board of some sort that may be a speed control. A diode of some sort is exploded and I cannot read the number or it would be changed out for giggles and fits. I was thinking it was a pulse...

Power for a hoist
I have a small electric hoist that is a wall plug in, and geared to 500 lbs lift. It is a cute little thing, but the power board is blown out, and not available. If I assume this thing is 12 volt, how many loaded amps should I anticipate??? I can get power strips for Led lights and other uses fairly...

Re: Best Type of Axe for Busting Rotten Stump?
A hill guy came to town and wanted a new fangled chain saw. He heard they would cut trees faster than any axe. So the guy at the store sold him a small chain saw and the guy appeared the next day, very unhappy. He claimed the saw did no better than the axe, and he could not get it to produce more cu...

Re: Never enough time
I have been involved with health issues and have ignored the board here as there is not much progress to write about. I am long on plans, but short on action. Just this Monday I was in Mantards and saw they have a house brand LED strip light of 3500 lumins. Since I am on a high rate of consumption, ...

Re: Best Type of Axe for Busting Rotten Stump?
It will work like most other fixes in a can. It depends on the correct fits to start with. On that thought, metal wdges come in several sizes. I get mine form Ace hardware when needed. Tehy vary in size form about a half inch for carpenter hammers on up to an inch and more for the bigger stuff. I wo...

Re: Electric motors
Permag motors of the standard type are terrible n low speed high load situations and heat badly. The controls are better if you use current limiting or pulse wave at higher voltages for the low end torque. At one third of rated speed you are all good and can live there, but a dead creep is to be avo...

Re: Best Type of Axe for Busting Rotten Stump?
Thats why chain saws took over for the hand axe. But dont be too hard on your adventure. Think of what the Bubbas taught you, and how much you learned already. Such progress is called experience, and makes your bulb that much brighter on the tree. I just so happened to change the handle in a short c...

Re: Best Type of Axe for Busting Rotten Stump?
I have a file like stone that I wet the edge with. The boyscout handbook I have says to lay the head againsta stake, and push the file into the edge. I never had any luck as the heads I have are too tough/hard for that to work. We have grandpas sharpening wheel that is about 24 inches in diameter wi...

Re: Question regarding graphite crucibles
I have not the occasion to use graphite, only relaying what I was told. I used clay and carbide so it is a different animal. I started casting aluminum out of a cast iron dutch oven, and will never go back, due to iron contamination. I cant stress that enough for the newbe that is going to get start...
