Two great books for the home shop machinist come to mind; The Amateurs Workshop and The Beginners Workshop. The excellent however getting old and very english - a lot of myford accessories etc (nothing wrong with myfords but today it strikes me they're the exception not the norm) so there's always r...

Re: Took a lot for granted!

McGyver, You take a lot for granted when you make statements like this: "That you went on to say how demanding your applications are says you don't understand " What made you think that I would use a three jaw chuck for any precision work! Nothing I said in any of these post could have be...

Dave, wasn't trying to be difficult but you could go buy the best chuck out there and still not be much better than .004 at some places on the scroll, certainly none of them are accurate enough for precision work (set-tru's notwithstanding, different animal). That you went on to say how demanding yo...

don’t waste your time, 004 is fine for a 3 jaw - IF by wiggle you mean run out; the piece is aligned with the lathes axis but is .004 thou eccentric to it. this comes up so much it should be a sticky - i'm just going to repost stuff i wrote before :D Mcgyver: most of the inaccuracy in a 3 jaw is in ...

Is there a readily available definitive source of information on how to grind and use HSS tool bits. . any grade 11 or 12 high school shop text. Seriously, these are excellent sources to cover off the basics, every shop should have a couple. gotta be tons used and cheap out there - phone your local...

Bob, i like that one, quick and simple. GG, the value imo isn't for unf or unc its for all the odd balls, like making an end cap that screws into a 1 5/8 bore and you figure 20tpi would work, that sort of thing....i find those sorts of things come up all the time, no set standard just a nominal size...

drill press has always been the most dangerous in my mind. My safety innovation, at least its orginal thought to me, is to clamp a big hunk of angle iron to the table with a heavy duty clamp. If something every did grab and get away, this arrests it. Its almost a permanent fixture on the table - in ...

home shops all having mills is a modern luxury, the model engineer of old would have done everything on the lathe. Face and plate and angle plate are the way to squaring a block, or you can use a four jaw but I’ve always thought the angle plate method was more accurate (assuming its square). Nowaday...
