Re: looking at my first mill, can I get by w/a chinese mini
Personally, I would not even think of boring large holes in 1" plate, using anything smaller than a Bridgeport. One maybe, nevermore....

Re: precision tools and winter rust
Both halves of the sign wave are the same voltage, but change polarity 60 times/second. Take away half, you still have full voltage, but only half the time. Am I nuts? Nuts, nope. But it might make it clearer to explain that we reference the 120 volts to neutral. So, the diode will put out 120 volt...

Re: Which hacksaw blade would be best for
I have cut pieces from blade stock that are skip tooth, maybe 6 TPI. Need to check stock, maybe later today.

Re: Alignment Test Bar
Morse taper test bars can be used to check the headstock, and tailstock. Only place I found (in the USA) with a quick search is: http://www.millermachineandfabrication.com/ I believe you will need a MT3 for the headstock, and a MT2 for the tailstock. A dogbone style is useful to reset/test the tails...

Re: Alignment Test Bar
I looked in my scrap bin. 6061 was there, made my own. Now I'd find some 12L14, after machining I would apply gun blue to make it look official and help keep the rust off.

Re: Newbie needs some advice on working with machinist.
mrfortynine, A few clues on the jargon/standards used in the trade. "How close does it need to be?" or Tolerance. +-.001" (one thousandth) is fine for bearings, rarely sheetmetal. If you measured it with a tape measure, +- 1/16" is proper. (or +-.060"). +-.015" is fine,...

Re: Fly Cutter Vs. Face Mill
Bridgeport Clone (Induma) 1.5 Horse J Head. Not a very active bunch, probably off for the long weekend. I'll throw out my thoughts on the three types of cutters. I say three, because that's really what you have. #1 is a flycutter. Typically a single cutting tool spinning around throwing chips all o...

Re: Making boring bar
The heat treatment of HSS depends a lot on the specific alloy. Ones I work with temper out at about 1100 deg F and soften enough to machine. I have modified HSS tooling this way and you can soften it enough to turn on the lathe. Heating to bending temperature is high enough to actually austenetize ...

Vern,
Sorry, no plasma here. I'm of the torch generation.
Actually the stuff I do is rarely in plate. (Or it's Aluminum that I run thru the vert band saw.)

Re: Trying to setup sheet metal tools
Since you posted the map, I guess you want suggestions. A few thoughts: A 52" foot shear is sometimes used to cut 4' x 8' stock, you might consider wheels (extended just beyond the foot pedal, so it won't tip over. Same thought on the box and pan brake. I move my little one around all the time....
