Re: Valve Guide Material?
Hi There, Some hot-rod engine builders will drill and tap a small hole for a set screw that comes into valve guide area so the set screw will bear against the pressed in guide. Start from the valve spring seat and angle the hole in towards the guide. An oversized guide may be available (depending on...

Re: brown and sharpe
Hi There, Sorry, colored case hardening involves cyanide. Not strictly true. It depends on the steel composition. The cyanide process was favored long ago because it was cheap. Nowadays, the restrictions make it difficult to use in this country. Color case hardening was done with chard leather, bone...

Re: Warbaby Southbend 9C lathe
Hi There, Just because it was made during the war years doesn't mean it was made for the Navy. If it was made for the Navy, it should have an anchor stamped on the bed near the serial number. Lots of Government agencies and private companies used lathes and the demand was high during WW II. SBL woul...

Re: Vactra 4 vs Vactra 2
Hi There, I got my 1-gallon jug from Enco. MSC is still selling it, although the container looks different (blue instead of black). https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/60002151 https://cdn.mscdirect.com/global/images/ProductImages/6000215-24.gif Wow! That is a lot more than McMaster-Carr wants...

Re: Logan 11" Lathe
Hi There, Logan lathes is a tendency to break teeth off the gears in the headstock. That is usually caused by engaging/disengaging the back gears while under power. Logans have a back gear lever in the headstock that pulls the back gears into engagement using an eccentric. Because this is out of the...

Re: Logan 11" Lathe
Hi There, The one I am looking at appears to be MT2 in the spindle and 16 speeds, not VS. I assume you mean with an adapter, it is MT2. The 11" Logan should have a 1-3/8" through hole with either a 2-1/4" x 8tpi. threaded spindle or the L00. Logan used a proprietary internal spindle t...

Re: Logan 11" Lathe
Hi There, I have one. It is a later "Powermatic" version with the L00 spindle. It is an okay lathe but the spindle brake is a joke. Similar in construction to a SBL Heavy Ten. Tail stock is larger and heavier than a 10L's (MT3 vs. MT2). The VS drive is not as well thought out and the older...

Re: Lathe comparison
Hi There, The 4900 I believe used an adapter for 4C collets. There was an South Bend Heavy Ten with a smaller spindle (The 10R) It also had a MT #4 spindle and used an adapter for 2A (a.k.a. 2S) collets. If memory serves me right, the 2A goes up to 11/16" and the 4C goes up to 3/4". Of cou...

Re: Lathe comparison
Hi There,
According to the sales brochure I have for the 4900,
The internal spindle taper for the 4900 is MT #4. Also,
the spindle is supported by a pair of Timken roller
bearings and not sleeve bearings.
Good Luck!
