Re: Parkinson's and trichloroethylene (TCE)
Way back, when I was in the electronics industry, at the end of each day, we would grab 1 gallon cans of "trike" and pour it over the benches (and everything else in the lab) and clean them with a handful of rag. Then clean tools, hands, and any bits and pieces (such as car and M/C parts) ...

Re: LBSC and the Petrolea, lesson in checking dimensions
With some of his locos, Curly built one then either did the drawings or gave it to someone else to draw. Juliet was done that way. Donaldson actually drew it, based upon an engine LBSC had built. (And a fine engine they are too.) As Bill said, errors are not unusual with model drawings. Check, check...

Re: New England Wireless and Steam Museum Show
Apart from the steam engines, there is some superb early wireless equipment there.
(Yes, I restore vintage wireless / electronics as well as play with trains!)
A shame it is so far away.

Re: Copper Boiler Brazing/Construction Question
It is worth mentioning that you MUST have a gap between the pieces for the solder to flow into. (OK, not grammatically correct, but you get my meaning.) Clamp or bolt them too tightly and you will get a small fillet on the outside, but NO flow actually in the joint. A rusty piece of an old feeler bl...

Re: 3.5 inch Gauge Juliet
Juliet as originally designed pulls a reasonable load (2-3 adults), is easy to fire and run, keeps going, has no vices, and is a lot of fun.
And at the end of the day you can pick it up and walk away with it.
It is the "lot of fun" that is the important thing. A hobby SHOULD be fun!

I dont know anything about that specific one, but Juliet is a superb loco, will pull a reasonable load and runs well.
They are simple to build, and to maintain, and great fun to "play " with.
I built one back in,... about 1964 or 5, and helped build a batch of 5 some years later.

Re: Miniature Train Wreck
I'm not going to get into a debate about what might have happened, nor express my opinion on possible cause(s), as I dont have enough information to make a valid judgement. All I will say is that "too much speed" seems far too simplistic to me. You can say that about any vehicle and it wil...

Re: Getting Rid of Boiler Tests
In the UK, we only had to get agreement with one group, the insurance companies. If a boiler passes its tests (administered by the club testers), then it will be insured. Fail, and no insurance. (Or, the owner can make his own arrangements for insurance, which may or may not be acceptable to any clu...

Re: Loco Efficiency & Superheat
Fred, the entire collection of software that Bill Hall sent me, totals around 250mb, so the only practical way is to send a CD of it, which I will do to Jos. However, I am sure that most people would only need the boiler programme, so will see how best to make that available to others. Incidentally,...

Jos, if you cant find his boiler programme, let me know and I'll send it to you.
Bill sent me the latest issue shortly before he died.

Re: Loco Efficiency & Superheat
Jos, I have always found that the late Bill Halls software gives answers that appear to match the measurements.
I know you were in contact with Bill, so assume you have a copy.
