Re: My first pour went pretty well
I've done a lot of Al casting using steel pipe crucibles - a bit larger than yours. Kiln wash (available from pottery supply houses) does a great job protecting the steel (and aluminum). Very cheap and little bit lasts forever. You brush it on and the furnace heat bakes it - needs a recoat every onc...

Re: HSS Wet Grinder Question
Harold, Dave - I appreciate your replies. First, the wheel does rotate downward relative to the front of the grinder and the tool rest so that seems OK. Next, Dave is correct in that I am mainly sharpening wood turning chisels. I have been using an 80 grit grey wheel dry, dipping the chisel in water...

HSS Wet Grinder Question
I picked up a wet wheel grinder at a garage sale eons ago, finally got it running, but probably not running correctly. I've never used one so I am not sure what to expect. It is an old style grinder where the wheel rotates in a water bath. The motor is connected to the wheel by a belt, and the pulle...

Re: Interesting Statement: Grizzly Website
There might have been more to the story. e.g. "we are not interested in accounts that will discount heavily, erode margins for all our other accounts, and ultimately erode our margins." I don't know about industrial manufacturing but I did some work for a manufacturer with multiple sales c...

Re: MIT website with videos. Audio?
I downloaded these files and could email them to you. Actually I'm not sure they are the same - the ones I have are for a robotics course and are called 'EHS-Tech-MachineShop' followed by numbers. I could not locate the files from your link so I'm not positive. Interesting enough on my old computer ...

Re: Motor help
The motor is saved :D Thanks for all your help - I learned a lot. Part of the saga is that the capacitors were $3.20 from Grainger + $8.50 shipping so I bought two of them. The second one worked. Reconstructing the sequence, the dust clogged the original cap and burned it out. I swapped it for a new...

Re: Motor help
Well almost .... I think your advice was correct - it was full of sawdust (former wood lathe motor) so I brushed it out, found the contacts and gently scraped them shiny, and lubed the centrifugal switch. Ohmeter showed connectivity to the cap at rest, none when the switch was released - though this...

Motor help
I have a 1/2 hp, capacitor start, 110V motor that recently stopped starting. When turned on it would hum, but I could give the pulley a spin and it would start running just fine. Aha, I thought, and bought a new starting capacitor with exactly the same specs as the old one. However with the new one ...

Re: Bench Master MH1 Vertical Mill
There is a Benchmaster Mill group on Yahoo Groups where you could ask about parts. I was a member until I sold my Benchmaster (which did not have a belt guard). My guess is you will have to fabricate one but you should be able to get pics from the group.

Re: Plans wanted for Carbide Tip inserts tool holders
I have a set like the ones shown by Jim Glass and fabricated some extra holders out of 1/4" key stock. Very easy to make. I ground the end to match the angle of the insert, milled a small sliver off the end to keep the insert from moving, drill, and tap. The hardest part is not breaking the tap...

Re: How to put a 90-degree bend in .125" thick aluminum?
I THINK a small press brake will do what you want, it depends on the width of the aluminum. I fabricated a small bending brake using plans from the Miller Welding web site and it will bend 1.5" wide, .125" thick steel. Typically I bend 12 - 15" widths of 18 gauge steel. You could prob...

Re:too many tools shop
Hi, I am also a sculptor working in wood and metal and I also like to make tools. My work is at http://www.vakilart.com My shop, a two car garage, is way too crowded so no pics but I have it sort of organized in three areas. One is machining; mill, lathe, horizontal band saw. Another is fabrication;...
