Re: Turbulators on propane boiler
Dave Can you post a drawing of what exactly you did in the smoke box with the stack? I apologize for the delay, but here, at long last, is the drawing you asked for. I've tried to give you a comprehensive reply so included sone additional information. I would think that the dimensions should propor...

Re: Turbulators on propane boiler
I can make a sketch of my exhaust nozzle and stack setup. I'll try to get to it next week. There is almost always more than one way to solve a problem in this hobby. The main points that I was trying to convey were that boiler set up et al is different for propane than for coal and the goal is to mo...

Re: Powder coating leaf springs
Depending on how your spring leaves were made the edges could be bright, even if they are blue temper. I would think the best edge condition would be rolled round, which is what I use and what McMaster-Carr usually provides. For those springs I have had them black oxide treated with excellent result...

Re: Turbulators on propane boiler
For the third test I extended the nozzle to 9 3/4" long to the top of the inner stack of the balloon stack. I also added a thermocouple down the exhaust nozzle to measure cylinder exhaust temperature. The thermocouple was pushed as far down as I could get it so to be at the base of the exhaust ...

Re: Turbulators on propane boiler
Next I removed my super nozzle and replaced it with a tube 2 3/4" long with a single hole in it with the same area. As can be seen in the first picture the new nozzle protruded into the stack petticoat at about the same height as the venturi diameter. I also added a thermocouple to measure smok...

Re: Turbulators on propane boiler
This is an interesting thread with a lot of good information. About 6 years ago I bought a Disney loco to Walt's original design and casting in what I would describe as derelict condition. But it had a very nice copper boiler that hydro tested well. It had the original front end design and blast noz...

Re: Winton Air Pump
My thoughts too. I added a chucking piece to the top of the cylinder head casting. The plan is to chuck the cylinder head by the base diameter and skin cut the chucking piece to 3/8" diameter. Then collet the cylinder head on the chucking piece to finish the base bolting face, O.D., and pilot v...

Winton Air Pump
I'm building three Winton 1 1/2" scale Westinghouse 9 1/2 air pumps using the original casting that I have had for a very long time. I'm building to the first design, drawings dated August 1969. Winton Brown was not bashful about making things complicated. I'm currently working on the Steam Cyl...

Re: Computer controlled speedometer, etc..
Consider a GPS bicycle speedometer. They work similar to your car's GPS system, just smaller. With GPS you do away with pickups or sensors or wires. You don't have to worry about wheel diameter as the computer measures ground position via satellite. All sorts of variations are available and prices t...

Re: WTB Silver Solder
RioGrande.com is showing about $26/troy oz. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk This an excellent tip! Thank you. I went to the RioGrande.com website and sure enough 1 troy ounce of 20 gauge (.032" dia.) "extra easy" silver solder was $26. If 3 or more ounces are purchased the price d...
