Re: Shoptask 1720

Thanks for the info and head-up on where to find the tool grinding info Harold! Looks interesting, but I may need to invest in some grinding wheels, as mine vibrate more than I think is good! Its been a busy couple of days... not all of which was spent on the machine... Work got in the way of pleasu...

Re: Shoptask 1720

Thanks Guys. When I was doing my Apprenticeship, and in Shop at school, we were taught to shim tools to the work piece CL, and we shaped or sharpened our own tools, when needed. That was 35/40 years ago, and I probably forgot what I knew, or learned! I hear you Harold, and my ears are open! My quest...

Re: Shoptask 1720

Got it. I will find some next week. So, on to some tooling questions... Please excuse my ignorance in advance.. My budget is tight, as I will need to buy a new chuck this month. Lets start with these 4 tools. One RH, one straight, one LH, and what looks like a boring bar with a split holder. ...

Re: Shoptask 1720

Update for today. After I cleaned and reassembles I decided to tackle the cross slide which I could not get the running consistently. I pulled of the crosslide and cleaned it, inspecting the dovetails and removing all traces of grease, because I found out it should be "Motor Oil". No no. ...

Re: Shoptask 1720

Thanks Harold! I was actually quite surprised on how good it was. Now I know what it is, I have a reference point. If I have to pull the milling head off to lube or replace the bearings, I know where it was. You are correct, that the machine has its limitations, but it should be able to do what I ne...

Re: Shoptask 1720

So, someone please tell me if I did this right, or comment on my methodology, and readings... Please! I set the milling head about central to the lathe center, and locked it down. Then I set the cross slide/ milling table about central to give me the largest "circle/swing I could get. Set the D...

Re: Shoptask 1720

The Cross slide Gib was interesting... not sure if its is original, but it looks like a Beaver chewed it to size... Note the poor machining, and burn marks where it was cut to length(rhs).... http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q143/sjkeysj/Garage/IMG_20160820_141526301_zpsamfmyrhd.jpg http://i135.ph...

Re: Shoptask 1720

Update for today. I decided before I think about pulling the Milling head assembly off, I should see where it is accuracy wise... Started by pulling out the Mill drill chuck, to clean and inspect. The Quill is held by a long bolt... 12mm hex on top, but looks like an M10 threaded rod. I was surprise...

Re: Shoptask 1720

Thanks Harold. I am kinda rusty... worked at a place with a Bridgeport with all the kit to hand, and now I have to figure out what I need and can afford. Toddalin, that second link looks like what what I am used to. My manual says the machine has a #3 Morse taper in the head and tail stock.... I wil...

Re: Shoptask 1720

Getting to it today, as I had some "HoneyDo's" yesterday.

The only tab I have on mine is on the end nut, and I am not sure if that does anything to the bearings.

Can I ask you guys what I should get to use in place of the chuck for milling?

Re: Shoptask 1720

Thanks Spro. I did everything I can see and think of with the wiring. I also lined up the belt pulleys, that were way off. Still no joy with using the higher speeds. I can only use the 500rpm option on the lathe, but I can use some higher speeds on the mill head. Today, I think I will pull the lathe...

I assume that means you likey?

I know I am "Preaching to the Choir", but I am so jazzed to finally have some milling and turning ability!

Also notice how clean and nice my chuck looks after a darn good clean???
