Re: Arizona Grand Scale Railway Society

I responded in the other post, I think to keep it such that you'll have interchange with other 15" tracks you should adhere to 15" gage standards regardless of scale. There are large dimensional differences in the wheel profiles between 3, 4, and 5" scale, one isn't going to work on t...

Re: Arizona Gandy Dancers

Looking good Glenn, it's nice to see things getting started already. Land use "politics" in WA for such things are not so great, too much money in every little postage stamp of property. Too bad nothing panned out locally. Regarding heat expansion, you can actually take the expansion rate ...

Re: 15” ga wheel standards

Glenn, Just speaking out my hind end, but I would say to go with the 15" gage standards being that regardless of scale, everything is going to be running on your 15" gage track. If you start fudging the #'s too much, everyone's 15" stuff isn't going to be able to run anywhere else.......

Re: 12” gauge DRGW Inspired RR

Question for you. Did you end up drilling clearance holes through your flat bar bolsters? I was looking at my 2-hole bearing housings, and it appears there is enough room for a flanged bolster pin, or maybe a button head bolt with the head turned down a little, if you installed the bolt first and th...

Re: 12" working railroad

Not much to report on the train front. The house is coming along and ready for siding and interior finishes. We had 2 - "100 year floods" and a "500 year flood" in November this year, receiving more than double our record of rain ugh. I had to scrap my backfill plans as everythin...

Re: Getting (Galloping) Goosed

The second wheel is roughed out. I used my die filer to clean up the bur left on the inside of the holes from the interrupted cut. It worked really well. Right now the plan is to make the axle then turn the wheel treads while on the axle. It will save having to make a mandrel. 20220115_144110_resiz...

Re: Driver Thrust Bearing

Teflon will also imbed dirt an become a lapping disc. Best to stay away from synthetics in hot and dirty areas like this I tried Teflon thrust washers in a similar application (custom built copper pipe bead roller), and the results were very weird. It held up good for awhile, then rapidly ate into ...

Re: Driver Thrust Bearing

I am all in on the lube up the center trick which I have been using for decades. I also cut radial grooves in the thrust discs so that they can allow lube up on the face. This, with bronze thrust washers for the win. In my opinion anyway. I've used my Dremel with a small ball end carbide bit to add...

Re: 12” gauge DRGW Inspired RR

Covid is no fun, we went through that mid-November through the first week of December. Hopefully round two wasn't as bad as round one?
Your progress looks great, can't wait to see it rolling.

Re: Diesel horns

I've been through quite a bit of research for the same thing. The tone of the car horns is too high and too loud. For something for the novelty of having a horn and not irritating the neighbors, I'm thinking it's going to end up being a horn sound module for model trains ($45), and I will run its sp...

Re: 12” gauge DRGW Inspired RR

Looking really good Curtiss. You going to have it rolling soon? Honestly I was thinking about modeling the same era D&RGW diesels when I started my backyard RR build, just for the fact the wood rolling stock would be so much faster and easier to build than steel. The nearly constant rain here in...

Re: Passenger train help!

Hi, Since you say you have a couple of 7.5" gauge locomotives, does it make any sense to run with 3 rails; 7.5" gauge for the locomotives and 12" gauge for the passenger cars? This would give a lot more stability for the people carrying cars. I've been to the Burnaby track (back in 1...
