Re: Help with a Boley lathe

Never seen one before, but that's a neat little lathe. Looks like, restored, it could sit in someone's den even if it was not to be used. nice find! :>)

Re: How to Braze Aluminum?

Those aluminum brazing products are hard to use as mentioned above. Scraping the rod on the spot until u see it flow/tin is one way to judge heat. Most of them u have to scrape them to get them to stick anyway! They are all alloyed to have a lower melting point than the aluminum, but not much!!

Re: Knurling?

yes on the scissor type...much better... That said, the tool post should not turn under stress. I found mine (Chinese) was not absolutely flat at the mating surfaces when u tighten the nut. The center surfaces showed contact/wear, but not the outer surface"circle". Very slight machining to...

Re: Turning Brake Roters on a shop lathe.

Given that you should not take very much off rotors, perhaps a tool post grinder setup would give a better result. I once tried to turn a rotor on a HF 3in1 "lathe" but found the rotor "rang" (oscillated) so much that the finish would be unacceptable.

Re: Tool Theft Issues

Agree with the observations above. The most important thing in a residential environment is to see to it that all likely involved KNOW that there is electronic recording onsite. (signs) And having as many cameras as possible, real or not, making it obvious that they WILL be seen. You won't reform th...

Re: Tool Theft Issues

You can get a security DVR and four cameras on eBeast for a bit over a hundred bucks. Yes they work, have motion detect/record "fence" setup and you can see them on your smartphone/pad wherever you are. Put up the cam put up the signs in all appropriate languages and things will change ......

Re: aftermarket 2-cycle carbs

Absolute yes on avoiding ethanol. Ethanol destroyed a plastic tank after a year of use! As far as needing octane booster, not really. Higher octane is needed in high compression engines to prevent detonation. I've never seen a two-stroke gas engine with "high" compression. :>)

Re: HF nemesis

Anything bought from HarborFreight (China) requires a level of personal inspection at purchase and then a real close exam when you try to use it. There is no quality control evident. You can get a perfect item one time and a dangerous piece the next. Because of price, I buy a LOT of Chinese products...

I'd try moving the tool slightly above and below ... normal may not be the sweet spot in that particular setup.

Re: Batterys, and Battery Charging

by all means, read up on lithium batts. you don't simply charge them to their working voltage. tried it..fried it . you pretty much have to have the correct charger for that specific lithium pack. the batts frequently have a temp sensor built in that communicates with the charger. you can charge the...

Re: frozen fittings/shafts/bolts

Well just used it again ... SS fitting in a cast alloy hydraulic assy for an outboard motor that the dealer tried and said could not ever be removed...course he wanted to sell a new assy... The heat>water cycle 3 times and it moved a bit. Two more cycles and it came out without any damage to anythin...
