I'm sorry, but I can't open your PM. I got a message saying I can't look at messages on hold.

If you could scan just the valves and valve gear gear that would be a big help!

Stuart Turner 5A drawings

I am looking for drawings for a Stuart Turner 5A engine. I am rebuilding a Shay engine that uses 3 - 5A cylinders.
The links are made from brass and are pretty worn. Even if I can get just the link and die block drawing it would help.

Re: Locomotive Steaming Down Tips

Blowing down from 40 PSI is not a good practice. Growing up in the live steam hobby that is what I did for years. The more involved I became with boilers professionally the less sense it made. When I told other boiler professionals about the practice they would shudder and ask if we really did that....

Thanks for the info! I'm seeking 6" Schedule 40.
In February I paid $145 for a 27 1/2" long piece of 6" Schedule 40 SA106B.

Re: Boiler plate specification

Frank, A53B will work just fine. It is often dual certified - A53B/SA106B.
A53A is acceptable but is only good for 80% of the pressure seamless pipe is good for.
What size are you looking at?

Hi Bill, Looks like the OD is 5-1/2". In the thread http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/viewtopic.php?t=104528&start=12 Marty mentions X-raying one of these fireboxes. I may do this if I can find someone nearby who can do for not too much $. SteveR Steve, when I X-rayed the firebox casting...

No - they were copies of Van Brocklin drawings. When we owned Allen Models they were conveyed to Friends Models.
Steve Alley still hasn't forgiven me.
