Re: Friction thread
I want a tapped hole to have a friction fit with a screw or set screw. For example, if I want an 8-32 set screw to be a friction fit, I use a #30 tap drill in place of the recommended #29. I haven't done this in metal, but just in wood for a saw plate insert in a table saw. I used set screws to lev...

Re: What's the fastest my spindle can go?
On a Jet 14 X 30 gear head lathe with only 2 spindle bearings. After a while of running at the highest speed of 1,400 RPM the spindle would bind up from the heat and would literally slow down. When that happened, I would open up the back cover and loosen the bearing lock nut a little and I would aga...

Re: LED shop lights?
Thanks, Richard. It's certainly easy to just replace the fluorescent tubes with the type A LED tubes and keep the ballast. A couple of years back I replaced two shop lights with LED fixtures and they are much brighter, so all I need now is to get the top priority home repairs done and I can proceed...

Re: LED shop lights?
I think that as the fluorescent tubes in my shop lights go out I'm going to replace them with LEDs. I'm thinking that the bypass tubes would be easier than pulling down the existing hard-wired fixtures. Budget is an issue — I'd rather keep the cost per fixture to less than $25. So have any of you b...

Re: Bench grinder questions
I like the JET bench grinder, because they have cast iron guards and tool rests. I started with a 10 inch, but later went to the smaller 8" grinder.

Re: Love Joy coupling
I am a bit curious about the set up. It would seem to me that you may be running the alternator in the reverse direction designed by the manufacturer? I don't know if the direction makes a difference or not? Or if it affects the alternator air cooling?

Re: Need a part
Usually the old one has a part number stamped in it. So you just order the new one with the same part number.

Re: Manual Lathe is Dead
I didn't like the video, but then I have been in the trade over 50 years. I still work in the trade and where I work we have both CNC and manual lathes and mills. In the last 4 years we have bought 3 new manual mills (Bridgeport type with 50 taper spindles) and 1 new 21" lathe. Also we have bou...

Re: Boring a Bearing Race
I regularly cut hardened drill bushings. I have been have good luck with a cermet cnmg432 and smaller bushings ccmt3252. Speed of around 150 SFM and a .001 to .0015. Run dry. Ceramic works well if there are no interrupted cuts. The idea as explained to me is the cutting pressure anneals the material...

Re: Boring a bearing journal vrs reaming
Thanks for the detailed replies Rich and Pete! Always appreciated. I looked into getting a solid carbide boring bar 12mm dia x 4.5" and the cost blew me away at $400! A bit steep for what it is..... I have been buying solid carbide boring bars from mmtoolscarbide on Ebay. I have used them quit...

Re: Collet Chuck
The collet chuck we got in the shipyard was 5C and made in Germany. It worked pretty much like the one you have. The handle was straight up and the bolt went down and attached to the bed much like a steady rest. Only a lower plate and upper plate. You would have a nut on the top plate and one undern...
