if the box is a simple split bearing with no res and waste, I use a good synthetic grease. oil does not stay put long enough imho.
I tend to deliver the grease via a center and cross drilled axle.

What amazes me is that guys with lathes manage to accomplish the task. It can be done, but it requires patience. paying attention to detail, understanding the limitations of the machine and knowing how to sharpen carbide seem to key factors in my case.
