12L14 machines like butter, makes it popular for hyd fittings. But awful as a thrust washer.

Re: Piston and valve cast iron ring material
I agree, whatever CI is around, remember the application, a few hours use per year.
For 2" or so rings, bore the ID, offset 1/64". Then cut the ring 180 degrees from the thin side. It is best to make a overlap type cut for the gap side.
Just makes a bit more work.

Re: Cabin Fever Auctions 2022
Very disappointed in this year's show. Many vendors were no shows, the exhibitors seemed down a bit. Crowds were light, but no snow, ice, rain.
Few people wore masks, which was a bit surprising.
Hoping 2023 is a better year.

Re: Electric wheelchair motors and controls
I would like to sell them, However if someone has a need for one that would be a different story. If you know someone that needs a WC, give them my info and I will work something out with them.

Electric wheelchair motors and controls
While not steam it is Train related . I am in a wheelchair 20+ years, as such I have used a number of chairs. Surprisingly the motors and gear box are not what wear out first. the wear is the joints of the arm rest, suspension, seating ect. I have 2 chairs available, both Quickie 646 model, one is a...

Re: Lapping in bushings
The word is burnishing the bearings, for bronze, brass type sleeve, a hardened steel ball is forced through bearing and expands it just aa might. A tapered and hardened drive pin can to the same.

Re: Ratchet wheel
When you are buying metals for small parts like the Ratchet wheel, just buy the easiest material for the job. As already stated A-1, W-2, D-2, all can be heat treated directly, no case hardening needed. Heat it cherry/orange, set it aside to cool to 150 +, then temper at a straw color, set it aside,...

Re: Making 6-32 threaded Rod
I often hear the 5-40 vs 6-32 pitch story, it mostly BS. A 32 pitch thread is double depth .047", a 40 pitch is .037 double depth. A #5 rod is .125" - .037= .088 minor dia. a #6 rod is .138" - .047= .091" minor Dia. .003 is not much, but disproves the story of more strength with ...
