Fellow Aussie here, just use it and get used to the backlash.
High end Lathes have adjustment for backlash but is a constant task adjusting as the nut and spindle wear.
Surprised to see the large spindle with 38mm thru hole and mt 5 taper.
Happy machining!

Re: Method to Press Gear off splined Shaft
The spacer runs the oil seal and the outer spline holds the countershaft sprocket for the drive chain, the ones I have worked on press off in one assembly.

Re: SS Rod
Going slow is the answer to preserve the blade of the hacksaw.
My workmate demonstrated cutting an Allen key with a hacksaw, slow strokes and cut it with ease.

Re: Why 29.5 degrees
Hi Guys, made this new spindle today for my cross slide on my lathe, original was worn where I use it most. Used 14mm drill rod, aka silver steel and ground the profile 30 degree trapezoidal thread. Used the tool upside down and lathe in reverse, only downside I could not use travelling steady, tool...

Re: Help Wiring Lathe
Harold the Monarch's have helical gears and I don't think they were designed to run in reverse with the opposite thrust on the drive shafts, not sure, maybe someone can enlighten me.

Re: Help Wiring Lathe
My 1954 Dean Smith & Grace did not have reverse, had to fit reversing switch but that became obsolete fitting a VFD.
Had a fast lock spindle so no danger of chuck coming off in reverse.
Correct me if I'm wrong I don't think the war built Monarchs have reverse.

Worked on a 2000 hp, 6.6 kv motor on a offshore facility, insulated bearings, non drive end had collapsed grounding the rotor, the epoxy surrounding the bearing had failed.
