Re: Shoptask owners?

Like I said, I bought three replacement spline shafts from Smithy and they all differ by just a hair Smithy spline shaft (extras): across round portion: #1-0.578", #2-0.578" (very tight fit on my gears, but they do go with minor coaxing), ShopTask original (broken in length, cracked in dia...

Re: Shoptask owners?

An update: When my machine broke the spline shaft for the threading gears, it was not Grizzly I got a replacement from, but rather Smithy. Go toward the bottom of the page and look at the Pulley Box, Diagram #14, Part #C30143, Gear 27 Tooth. Could this be what you need? And if it is not, could they ...

Re: Shoptask owners?

Just so you guys know, this is what he is dealing with. If the broach cuts "perfect angles" that may not quite line up with the spindle, which is "sloppy" toward the base circle, though it would probably work with a bit of filing. http://www.audioheritage.org/photopost/data//500/...

Re: Shoptask owners?

Poreba would appear to be the closest spline shaft arrangement, and it appropriate size, easiest to broach. They are still in business.

Re: Shoptask owners?

I was looking at my machine and 27 is pretty small and there wouldn't be a lot of surface area to contact. It may be doable.

Re: Shoptask owners?

Sounds like a good approach and the "press fit" could act as a "break away" if necessary. Certainly a whole lot easier than cutting teeth.

Re: Shoptask owners?

Have you asked Shoptask if they could do this? They had to broach the pulley that engages the mill's spline shaft after changing out a broken spline shaft for me and the replacement was a hair too big for the pulley when I tried to install it. BTW, my mill's spline shaft (4" throw) was no longe...

Re: Shoptask owners?

Maybe from Shopmaster/Shoptask? My Tri-Power shows the 27 tooth tapping gear being used on everything from 10 - 42 TPI as well as being used for lots of feed rates. I don't know if they are the same, or if Shopmaster/Shoptask has them, but worth a shot. I do know that when the spline shaft for my fe...

Re: To Farm Out to China or Not

I picked up my order today. I told him 100, but that I would buy any others so that he doesn't end up with excess materials. Ended up with 114 for $1,360 ($11.93/each). Very good quality and hard to believe they were all done on a Bridgeport (dry) where he had to do a whole lot more manually than th...

Re: To Farm Out to China or Not

I went to his shop to see it and give a deposit for parts. He has two large Bridgeports, one converted to CNC and two huge lathes back there.

The materials are ~$2.15 each and they will cost me $12 each, including the materials.

Re: To Farm Out to China or Not

Is there actually still a market for custom Chevy engine brackets? Hope he works out for you, and it sounds much better than China. :D It's a very small market that is continually shrinking, which is one reason I never persued a patent, though I did the research to get one. In addition to selling o...
