Re: fasteners
Metric Rules!!!!! I highly recommend the use of metric fasteners on your live steam projects. Back in 2000 when metric was only marginally acceptable in the live steam community (and mostly the result of ridicule) I started using metric on my steam engine projects Mich Cal Shay and RGS 20. Here are ...

Re: Wanted: West Valley baby 2-8-0 consolidation
Looks like a nice project.
Judging from the pictures, these engines were made using Chloe drivers. Julian Vansickle and and company did a similar project in the 1990's in Florida.
Do you know of any designs or drawings for fabrication of West Valley 2-8-0?

Re: 1 1/2 - 3 light signal heads covers
Bob,
Where these faces meant to bolt onto a 1" condolet?
What mechanism holds the bulbs in place?
Do you have a design on paper that you can share?

Re: Prototypicality vs. practicality
Jeff, Be careful not to paint yourself into a corner by selecting a flue that is too small. Many a 3/4" and 1" scale engine has been built with flues so small that only propane or other really clean fuel can be used. At some other time you (Or the next owner) may want to change up the fuel...

Re: Looking for Prototype Drawings of a Water-Bottom Tender
Fender, I suspect your photograph posted at the top of this thread is a shop modification or rebuild effort, ie probabley no drawings ever existed. If you follow the rivet patterns its obvious that there was horizontal bracing that ran the length of the tank and legs. This was no doubt cut out when ...

Re: Food for thought
A few years back I worked in the nuclear industry. I do recall one rule, 5059 determinations, I think, where the rule was about a half a page but the explanation, interpretation and application of the rule was a manual about 2 inches thick.

Re: Building the Southern Railway PS-4 Frame
Gotta add my two cents... I disagree with everyone reguarding either 1) pins of any orientation or 2) Tapped holes 3)nonintegrated keys on binders. As Joe Whitaker once told me, the prototype spent 100 years (1850 - 1950 roughly) evolving the design and fabrication methods. Tapping into the frames s...
