Re: Boring for Chuck Jaws?

I agree with GlenW. Instead of fooling with the 4 jaw and a DTI I use this #3MT ER20 collet holder and can handle stuff from 1mm up to 1/2". The Ebay collet chuck was so bad I reground the taper in situ, marked index marks on the spindle and chuck and have had very few problems since. It does h...

Re: A vise question

That looks like the Travers Tool Vise I bought years ago. Richard_W is correct that they are keys to be fitted to the bottom of the vise, end to end or side to side. depending on the vise orientation required.
(I wish I had bought a KURT, but stuff happens.)

Re: Reverse threading

This has been done on an Atlas 12" lathe, too. This setup used a faceplate, centers and dog driver, but I have done it with a screw-on chuck too, but for small threads.

I do this reverse thread whenever I can because there is no stop on this lathe either.

Re: I may have found my problem...

Since no one has mentioned it before, I will suggest that you find a copy of “HOW TO RUN A LATHE” by the South Bend Lathe company. If possible, find the 1966 version and not the 1914 version. On page 50 is the explanation for Cutting Speeds for turning. It says: “To find the number of revolutions pe...

Re: cutting the column on a drill press - how much to cut?

Before I had machining experience, I set up a fly cutter tool in a drill press to face off a small piece of black walnut. Couldn't have been more than 2.5in square. Turned on the machine and fortunately the fly-cutter flew the other direction. Had it flown my way I would probably still have the scar...

Re: The $460.19 oil change.....

I was looking for info on the Subaru Forester Premium because it has more computers than a gaming class. I tripped over the fact that the Japanese word Subaru is the name of the constellation some of the rest of us call Pleiades, thus the logo with the multiple stars.

Same on our 2020 Forester. Smaller oil filter than I've seen on a SUV though.

Re: Patio's projects

I installed a switch from Woodcraft that is nearly identical to the Rockwell switch shown. It works very well and is easy to turn off with my knee instead of reaching under the table groping for the little original switch. I don't have a VFD on the motor so it is just on and off.

It is used as you described for measuring whatever on the inside of something.

The Starrett indicator has the 'plunger' in the middle of the back so the inside measurement fixture is different from yours shown, but it is used for the same thing.

Re: Shaft Set Up in Mill

When I had a similar situation where I needed to add 2 parallel flats to a cylinder, I made a new set of vise jaws. One jaw had a V-groove in it that was cut parallel with the vise base. Both had the tops cut away to make clearance for the parallel cut. In your case you could just cut the V groove a...

Re: Buying a new parting tool

Being the sometimes-frustrated owner of a Flexible Flyer Atlas 12" lathe, I frequently have the chatter and jamming issue. I finally solved it for myself by first aligning the cutoff tool by moving it up against the face of the chuck and then tightening the clamp. During the cut I run the tool ...

Re: I found it!

In regard to the machine screw numbers, my friend had made a part with a tapped hole in it, and was totally frustrated that the 1/4-20 screw he wanted to use wouldn't fit. He whined and belly-ached until I looked in his tap drawer and found the 14-20 tap he had used. Very easy to miss the "/&qu...
