Barrel Liner Drills ????

Post by rbertalotto »

I just picked up a Winchester 1873 carbine in 44-40 caliber with a "sewer pipe" bore.

I have a 44-40 barrel liner from Brownells

I already have a 38-40 deep barrel drill bit.

The OD of both the 38-40 and 44-40 liners are the same.....

But the pilots on the drill bit are different
.38-40 - .391" (9.9mm); .44-40 - .419" (10.6mm).

What do you think about grinding the tip of the 38-40 drill and adding a bushing to guide it in the bore of the 44-40 barrel?

This is what the "pilot" looks like on the drill bit:

I hate to buy another $103.00 drill bit as I'm not sure I'll ever bore another 44-40.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

That's not what he needs. What he needs is a sleeve that would permit the small ground portion to pilot in the larger bore. Soldering, in this case, would not be a good idea.

There's no reason why one can't be made and used. It would perform best if it was hardened, honed, then ground, but I expect that one made from prehardened material (4140) would perform adequately, at least for one use.

Kind of a tangential question.

I was looking at the .22RF liners, and I see that one of them costs more than 2x what the others do. OK, it's 7" longer, but that oughtn't justify THAT much of a premium. Anybody here got a suggestion about that price differential ?

BTW - I tried to post a question to Brownells website but kept getting a "profanity filter" popup; and there was no questionable language in my post.

Do you have links to the two liners? Could be different material, made to different tolerances, different method of rifling. I have no clue I'm just spit balling.

Nothing in the "details" or "Q&A" that I could find. Here's the page with the three variations:

Bewildering. I note there are no reviews for the expensive one, and several for the cheaper. That might tell the tale.

Check back in a few days or so, the site let me ask a question, so I asked what the differences are between the two liners.

I decided to rebarrel the rifle with a Green Mountain barrel back to 38-40. which is what it shipped from the factory as.

You can read all about it on my web site
