A friend of mine has an older cleaning rod and the newer brushes will not screw in. It appears the rod has a 5/16"-28 thread and the new brushes are 5/16"-27 thread. I looked on the web and confirmed brushes being sold with a 27 thread pitch.
Now my question: Can anyone explain why a cleaning rod and brushes need such a non standard thread? Only reason I can think of is to create a captive market so as to charge more money needlessly.
A 5/16"-24 UNF thread would work just fine, and any machine shop would have the tap and dies for making parts and doing repairs.

According to a chart I have 5/16 27 is a gas brass pipe thread.
And I agree it is a PITA to mate it to an old cleaning rod.
