You don't say whether the barrel is original or a replacement. Also you don't say which model Mauser you have. If it has an original barrel and also has the M98 internal shoulder, the barrel is probably seated against that shoulder instead of the front of the receiver ring. If that is the case, you would need to face off the excess from the rear of the barrel to reduce the headspace. Facing the front of the receiver wouldn't do anything except increase the gap there.

Just because the bolt closes on the NOGO gauge doesn't mean the rifle should have the barrels et back. If you don't resize the cases all the way and justusethem inthatrifle you can use it. You would need to find out what the difference is between a GO and a FIELD gauge.

Personally I would set the barrel back, but just because I'm anal about that typeofthing.

Now that this thread has been revived, mtnsmith, have you resolved the head space problem? If so, how did you do it?
