Gun Blueing?

If you want a really blue color to the finished product, rust bluing is the way to go. And it is certainly a process that can be done at home with little risk. It is, however, a slow and labor intensive process. Brownell's has some rust bluing supplies and I am sure other sources do also.

Many many thanks George. I actually knew of the rust blueing process, but I also didn't know it would produce that old school blue color. That's more than helpful, and even I can manage to get metal to rust in my fairly dry climate.
