Stress Proof Steel

Post by Dave_C »

I made some spindle hubs out of Stress Proof Steel and I'm asking, can Stress Proof Steel be welded? I have was told that it is highly sulfurized and is not weldable so I discarded the hubs and remade them out of 1018.

It sure does machine nicely though.

What say yea?

It is not recommended for welding. If for no other reason, it can be heat treated (medium carbon content) and would require proper handling in order to prevent issues with hardness and fracturing. If the choice was mine, I would not make the decision to weld.

Years ago they made boiler tub plugs out of stress proof instead of 1018. This was done by a mixing of the material on the rack. When the boiler was hydro tested all the stress proof plugs had to be replaced as the welds didn't hold. Not even long enough to pass the test.

Richard and Harold,

I heeded your advice and did not attempt to weld the stressproof steel. I happily made the hubs out of 1018 and they turned out great.

All is well...Although I made some expensive scrap!

Stress Proof steel is mig welded everyday and i questioned it many time while welding it. I was a robotic mig welder in a large stamping plant that does work for Harley Davidson. Their foot shifters are Stressproof steel mig welded to a mild steel stamping. Now would i do it in my shop? Don't know but did it at work...Bob

Now if only they could stress proof the operators.
