Along with what WarmStrong1955 said I find they show the contrast between your weld puddle and flux a lot better (assumeing that you are using either a stick welder or another process that has a flux coated weld). I also find using a gold lens easier to look through on long days, they doesn't seem to strain my eyes so much. Like the gold lenses I have also seen a silver lens, my Dad had one and can't remember where he got it, (not that I have looked for them myself I've just never seen them in stores.) I liked that lens a lot as well. The gold lenses do scratch easier, if you take care of them they can last a good long time. I think I bought my last gold lens about 10 years ago. I need to replace it now but I figure that is a pretty good life span. The helmet that I have with the gold lense isn't the only helmet that I have and use but it is the one I use 90% of the time day to day.

...One other reason to use a gold lense, you look like an Astronaut!
