Here's an old instructional film from the Lincoln Welding Foundation done by Disney Studios that discusses shrinkage/distortion in welding and how to deal with it. I thought it was well done and informative.

cheers,

Hi Ken,

I rebuilt my tractor's bucket this spring and was wondering why some of my welds produced warp and others didn't. It was the first time use (after lots of coupon work) of my Miller 211 and my poor skills. For each plate and situation (butt and Tee) I tried a different way with mixed results. Then this arrived and it all began to make sense. Very useful, I'll be better informed for the next project.....

It turned out better than I thought, but that was sheer luck, great example of an unconscious incompetent......
