whiskey Barrel Hoops
I need to fabricate several hundred hoops for wood whiskey barrels.. the hoops are made from 1/16" steel 1 1/2" wide rolled into a circle with a 5 degree flare across the width of the hoop. any suggestions on how to make these would be appreciated.

I did a Google search for: "how to make hoops for a barrel" and came up with a bunch of hits. Here is the first one: http://www.ebay.com/gds/How-to-Make-Bar ... 227/g.html

i would look at a roller . depending on size a small bench top mounted unit should work. machine a new set of wheels to provide the proper needed taper. using the hammer method will save on gum menbership

Re: whiskey Barrel Hoops
i will guess that all three will need to be the same as it will make several passes thru before to size. # 3 wheel machine
that said a machine for this should be a simple fabrication project as the pressures involved will not be huge.

i have a harbor frieght version of this.

If you really need a conical section, I don't think a simple ring roller will get you there, though I think most bands are probably not conical, not sure. Anyway, to make it conical would require not only bending it into a ring, but also stretching one side somewhat. Otherwise, you get a coil spiral rather than a ring that meets up forming a conic section.
