New Project

Post by Mike Walsh »

I am looking into building a 1/12 scale passenger car out of steel. My plan is to have the sides/ends water/laser cut, out of 1/16" steel.

My question is, can one weld 1/16" steel at 90* angles without much warping? The roof will likely be removable. I don't want any bends in the model, which is why the roof, two sides, and the bottom will be cut separately.

I might see if I can have a friend TIG weld it and then have the welds ground down to create 90* corners (no bead visible). If I do this, would it be advisable to have a butt weld (IE the inside corner of each piece just touching)? This would mean if I had a 10" wide model, my bottom piece would be 9-7/8" wide.

I have never designed parts to be welded, so I could use advice.

Thanks,
Mike
