I use a K-bond formula, that is red when freshly mixed. It contains some iron oxide which prevents scabbing and sand inclusions for bronze that can be a problem in 'green' molded sands. When used some of it 'burns' and darkens to black, but it does not majorly effect the quality of the sand if remixed. Over time, I have had to 'freshen' the mix with synthetic outboard oil, and on ounce or two of Isopropyl alcohol that makes the sand sticky. DO NOT USE COMMON MOTOR OIL. It is designed around the reaction and high temperature acceptance of the synthetic. I bought the original dry Petro Bond mix in 50 lb bags, (2) at reasonable rate, and mixed in a mini mull, that actually stalled when the bonding strength went up. My stock is stored in buckets that are being eaten by nature, and the lot is about to be transferred to a galvanized trash can while I get my foundry set up again this year. So all my sand will be reconditioned again. I used white blaster sand (100 mesh) as the base, and have seen FINGERPRINTS in the casting surface, the detail captured can be so fine. Venting can be a problem, so pricking the mold and under-ramming is a matter of feel for control of tightness for gassing out.

Iron is too hot for oil sands, but in small parts, survivable. It degrades the sand at faster rates. So, wet additions and more conditioning are needed. I dont do Iron, b/c it burns down the furnace and crucibles trying to get that hot. You need a heated blast for the fuel gas, and that is a different design problem for small furnaces.
