KBond, Bentone 34, Organo clay

Post by ChipsAhoy »

Has anyone absolutely found a source for Bentone 34, or any organo clay that may work in it's stead?
Of course, not looking for 50# bags, unless it is very reasonably priced. Looking more over for about 5# to 10#.
I'd like to mix up 100 to 200#s of KBond.

Thx Davidf
Close, but no cigar.
Couldn't find a supplier for Bentone 34 or anything similar. Perhaps I missed it somewhere, but I read most all 2-3 times.
The two possibilities I saw their neither sold it.

Thx Ken, I scanned thru, didn't find any in those guys.

Not sure what you mean by the "OP", I went back thru the thread some more and can't find company with the ref OP.

Petrobond and Petrobond II make fine casting sand.

K-Bond, does not use Petrobond as it's binder, it uses an " Organo Clay". Some by trade name are, Claytone40, claytone 11 VG-69 and Bentone 43.
When you do a lot of pouring, (per session) and you use your sand over and over, K-Bond "made with Bentone 34" does not smoke as much and the sand does not burn as quickly. Less burnt means less time in the muller, (using a riddle can normally keep up). Seem to have to add make up oil a little less often.
So, am switching from Petobond types to K-Bond types. Only problem is finding a supplier of my favorite binder, Bentone 34, in small quantities, and I was hoping in the last year or two someone has stumbled onto a supplier who is "small Foundry Friendly"

Thx Davidf, I will contact them, (and post feedback)
BTW, I went digging around on that Alloy forum, (I signed up there also now), lots of good info to help beginning foundries, Big help that fellow (OP) that sells and ships petrobond w/no shipping cost, if you want petrobond, that is the way to go.

I may be on a fools errand here.

Smith-Sharpe will sell petrobond and petrobond II mixed
unmixed 50# bag is the smallest they will do, Marshall was the salesman. $2.90 per # plus freight

Jerry at lagrande, Petrobond II, $3.25 per # plus freight, 50# min.

Carpenter Brothers, petrobond #50... yada yada yada

Misco.com, same, same... BUT. Penny is looking into finding out what it is and suppling it as they have had other inquires.

So far, the petrobond guy listed on Alloy is the best deal, for petrobond...

Bottom line
I can find nothing on Bentone 34 Wrats!!

If I find it, I will share info.
