I have a large and old oscillating spindle sander that came with only one table insert, 3", although it has spindles to 4" and larger. After watching one of the volunteers at the RR making patterns, I decided to try it for the table inserts; I made three, one for 4", one for 2" and a universal one, with smaller inserts for 1" and below. The final cost was $50 each for cast iron.
An interesting and rewarding effort.

Cool!
I don't have any experience with spindle sanders, but may cobble something together if the need arises. My wife would probably be the oscillator. Why are the holes oblong?

If there was only one way to do each machining job, the smell of sulphurized cutting oil smoke would have fewer fond memories.

Re: Table Inserts
The spindle tilts so when it is tilted there needs to be relief in the slot - tilt is up to 20? degrees.
