Written by the junior Gingery

I also recall the Gingery furnace book has a recipe for a type of crucible wash that you can paint/fire on a steel crucible. Not the most durable given the different thermal expansion characteristics of glass/steel but cheap (ground glass and borax if I recall)

I have extensive experience in the melting of precious metals, and while I agree that a graphite crucible is a reasonable choice for such use, it is all too easily consumed by use, as it burns away rather quickly when it is exposed to atmosphere. Were you to suggest the use of a graphite/clay crucible, I might agree with you, although the ultimate choice for the foundry is a silicon carbide crucible.
